Knife Care

The best way to ensure your Dragontail Forge knife becomes a family legacy is to take care of it. By following a few extremely simple practices, your knife will last the test of time.

  1. NEVER PUT YOUR KNIFE AWAY WET

  2. Do not run your knife through the dishwasher. Hand wash only and wipe dry.

  3. After drying, coat your blade and handle in oil or wax, making sure you wipe off the excess before putting your knife away.

  4. The carbon in your blade will react with the acid contained in foods, in particular fruits and proteins. Cleaning your knife immediately will help reduce this reaction.

  5. Over time, your knife will develop a thin surface coating called a patina. The patina is actually a helpful form of surface rust that will help prevent corrosion. This patina is impossible to stop; the more you use your knife, the faster it will develop. This is part of what makes each knife unique - they will all develop at different rates and in different spots. It will develop and change as you do.

  6. If your knife has a leather sheath, I recommend using a paste wax on the outside of the sheath to maintain its elasticity and to protect it from water. If the sheath becomes wet on the inside, make sure it is completely dry before storing your knife. A good rule of thumb is to let the sheath dry for a full 48 hours before putting your knife back in for long term storage.

  7. NEVER PUT YOUR KNIFE AWAY WET.
